Starting work
How to Get a Tax File Number in Australia
Short answer
A Tax File Number is free and you apply through the ATO. Australian citizens apply online with a strong myID; migrants and visitors apply online once they are in Australia on a valid visa. You have 28 days from starting work to give it to your employer, or withholding jumps to 47%.
Who applies how
- Australian citizens 15+: apply online via myGov with a strong myID, or at participating Australia Post outlets with ID.
- Migrants and visa holders in Australia: apply online through the ATO's foreign passport holder process - you need a valid visa and passport.
- Under 15 or no digital ID: paper application to the ATO.
It is always free. Avoid third-party sites that charge for TFN applications.
Why it matters for your pay
Give your TFN to your employer on the TFN declaration when you start. Without it, the employer must withhold at the no-TFN rate - 47% for residents, 45% for foreign residents - and your super fund pays extra tax on contributions. You have 28 days from starting work to provide it before top-rate withholding kicks in.
Keep it private
Your TFN is yours for life. Only give it to the ATO, your employer (after you start), your bank, super fund or tax agent - never over social media or to unverified callers.
