Overtime & Penalty Rate Calculator Australia
See how extra hours at overtime and penalty multipliers add up across a week, and what you keep after tax.
Short answer
Overtime is usually paid at 1.5x your base rate for the first few extra hours then 2x, with penalty rates for weekends, evenings and public holidays. Your award sets the exact multipliers. Extra pay is taxed at your marginal rate, 30% between $45,001 and $135,000, and overtime generally attracts no super.

Estimated annual take-home

Overtime and penalty multipliers depend on your award or enterprise agreement - the values above are examples. Some overtime may not attract super. Check Fair Work for your entitlements.
Overtime vs penalty rates
Overtime applies to hours beyond your ordinary hours. Penalty rates apply to less-sociable times like weekends or public holidays. Both raise your gross pay, and your take-home rises a little less because of tax.

The multipliers here are examples. Your real entitlements are set by your modern award or agreement. Use the Fair Work Pay and Conditions Tool to confirm, and read overtime and penalty rates explained.
Frequently asked questions
Is overtime taxed more?+
No special overtime tax exists, but a big one-off pay can push that pay into higher withholding. It evens out at tax time.
Do I get super on overtime?+
Often not - super is generally paid on ordinary time earnings, and most overtime is excluded. Check your payslip and agreement.
What are common penalty multipliers?+
Saturday is often 1.5x, Sunday 1.75x-2x and public holidays 2.5x, but it varies by award. Confirm with Fair Work.
